Mark Gevisser, author of Dispatcher: Lost and Found in Johannesburg, and Imraan Coovadia, author of Tales of the Metric System, read from their works and discuss how their literary writing responds formally to the city of Johannesburg and the kinds of planned violence that are embedded within it. Zen Marie then reflects on the commodification of Johannesburg through the slogan ‘I am Jozi’, an example of attempts to rebrand a notoriously violent city as a more attractive, albeit increasingly gentrified, urban space.
